Per Augusto Preta, fondatore e direttore di ITMedia Consulting, il 2009 è "l'anno in cui emergono nel mercato tv dei macrofenomeni nuovi, che lo differenziano dagli anni precedenti e ridefiniscono il futuro della televisione". Per esempio, analizzando la pay tv "anche se in media i suoi ricavi in Europa hanno superato quelli della pubblicità, il settore è molto più forte nei paesi del Nord, dove è ben sviluppato il cavo, mentre in nazioni come l'Italia, dove pesano di più le emittenti terrestri e via satellite, la pubblicità continua a fattutare più della tv a pagamento. Inoltre, all'interno della pay tv, la pay per view non è più marginale grazie all'offerta del digitale terrestre".
